Between Inherited Rurality and the Contemporary
City. Bucharest: “Processual” Urban Landscape in the
Traditional Fabric

The inherited traditional urban landscape in a historical city can be read and understood today as the result of a complex process, shaped by spontaneous urban dynamics and/or by planned ones as well. In this way, one can eventually speak of “processual landscape,” where the vernacular meets the conceived and planned urban structures, and the spontaneous consciousness meets the critical one in a persistent negotiation.
The present paper aims to approach the landscape of the traditional urban fabric of Bucharest through the lens of the Italian typo-morphological school, focusing on a case study of some urban fragments in which the characteristics of the pre-modern, rural substrata shaped the existing structures, becoming a morphological persistence. According to the Italian approach, for buildings, the type is defined as an “a priori synthesis,” emphasizing the idea of an organic process which eventually gains an operative value, becoming an object of reference for future interventions, after being first an object of study. But what about the unbuilt, the landscape “in between,” as an element that defines specific urban textures in a “porous” city with an inherited rural substrata such as Bucharest, defined by Cincinat Sfințescu as “urbs in horto”? In which manner do the lessons of the unbuilt spaces from the traditional fabric, understood in a processual way, can help us today in the planning activity and how can one intervene there, if necessary, in order to conserve their valuable characteristics?
