In 1990, a pivotal moment occurred, marking what David Jacques terms “the rise of cultural landscapes.” These landscapes serve a crucial role by offering a cultural context, acting as a canvas that reflects daily life, the creation of spaces by individuals, and the rhythm of existence.
They narrate stories of people, events, and places across time, instilling a perception of continuity and the inevitable passage of time. In Cluj-Napoca, a new direction in the development of its cultural landscape is beginning to take shape.
This study emphasizes the dynamic transformation of Cluj-Napoca’s urban space, shaped through public architectural competitions held between 2005 and 2023. It provides insights into how Cluj’s evolving cultural landscape reflects an architectural expression that is more subtle, functional, and community-oriented. Drawing on the concept of superordinary, this article argues that the seemingly ordinary outcomes of these competitions—characterized by understated, contextual designs—hold profound cultural and social significance. By embedding deeper meanings into urban spaces, these projects transcend functional objectives, fostering inclusivity, local identity, and community engagement. Through this lens, architectural competitions serve as mechanisms for producing cultural landscapes.
